Shaughnessy is one of Vancouver’s most prestigious neighborhoods to live in, namely for its mansions and reputation.
The neighborhood was developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway and quickly became popular due to its location, which is bordered by 41st Avenue to the south, 16th Avenue to the north, Oak street to the east and Arbutus on the west. Due to it’s location, it’s also known to be one of the highest points in the city next to Queen Elizabeth which displays incredible views. It’s named after Sir Thomas Shaughnessy, a Canadian Pacific Railway administrator.
The neighborhood is mainly full of residential homes with a higher-than-average portion of heritage homes and features few private and public schools. In 1981 the City passed a bylaw creating the First Shaughnessy Official Development Plan. This particular plan attempts to preserve the area’s pre-1940 estate image and single-family character while allowing just a few spaces to convert to multiple family use. Therefore, all applicants for development permits must demonstrate that they will follow the strict city plan guidelines.
Residents found Shaughnessy a neighborhood that directly reflected their wealth and status. They appreciated the location and its distance from downtown to stay residential. The main attraction includes VanDusen Botanical Garden which is very popular during Christmas time.
As for shopping, Arbutus Village Shopping Center offers banking and service amenities. On Oak Street you’ll find local shops and restaurants lined up on the street and at the southern border you have West 41st Avenue which offers everything from small coffee shops to the full Oakridge Mall experience.
Shaugnessy, Vancouver also holds top schools in the neighborhood. Shaughnessy Elementary school is located in the heart of the area. Due to its central location, you’re also close to three highschools: Eric Hamber Secondary, Prince Wales Secondary and Point Grey Secondary.
