Kitsilano is locally known as kits and is famous for Kits Beach – named one of the “top 10 beaches in the world” by international travel magazines.
Kits Beach is well-known throughout the lower mainland and draws a lot of attention. The beach also hosts several music festivals, live theatre entertainment and other community events. The view is remarkable, hence why it’s a popular destination amongst tourists and local alike. The neighborhood is bordered by water to the north, Burrard street as you head east and Jericho Beach Park to the west.
Kitsilano is known for the city’s best restaurants, retail along West 4th and Broadway and organic-food hubs. The first people living in Kitsilano were the Squamish and the neighborhood’s name is derived from a Squamish Chief, August Jack Khatsahlano. Due to its proximity to the early Vancouver settlement, it drew settlers and become one of Vancouver’s first suburbs.
A unique trait of the neighborhood is that most of its streets are named after trees (Pine, Balsam, Arbutus, Yew) and famous battles (Cornwall, Waterloo, Balaclava, Trafalgar).
Rich with culture and a popular spot for the younger demographic, Kitsilano attracts a lot of demand. In the 1960’s, Kitsilano became an inexpensive place to live as it was close enough to downtown. As the years change, the prices have increased dramatically, especially in the 2000’s where you started to witness heavy appreciation due to the amount of demand in the area and the location of the neighborhood.
The neighborhood also holds a ton of attractions for residents and visitors alike. It holds several festivals like Bard on the Beach, Khatsahlano Festival and Greek Day. In addition to the festivals, you’ll two museums, Museum of Vancouver and Vancouver Martitime Museum, and the City of Vancouver Archives. You’ll also have the farmers market, the community rink, several parks with lots of off-lease dog area with the incredible kits beach.
